Money Can’t Buy Me...

Daily Reading and Devotional from the Psalms

Psalm 49:6–11

6  They that trust in their wealth,

And boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

7  None of them can by any means redeem his brother,

Nor give to God a ransom for him:

8  (For the redemption of their soul is precious,

And it ceaseth for ever:)

9  That he should still live for ever,

And not see corruption.

10  For he seeth that wise men die,

Likewise the fool and the brutish person perish,

And leave their wealth to others.

11  Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever,

And their dwelling places to all generations;

They call their lands after their own names.

Paul said, “I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love”.

No, I don’t mean the Apostle Paul, Sir Paul said it, you know, Paul McCartney.

You can buy attention but you can not buy affection. There are a lot of things money can’t buy and love is only one of the most important on the list.

Money can’t buy me happiness.

Money can’t give me the security the investment broker promises.

Most importantly, money can’t buy anything in eternity. Heaven thinks so little of our currencies that they pave the streets with gold. Heaven doesn’t take Visa, MasterCard, or even American Express. There is only one currency that is accepted in Heaven and the Apostle Peter told us about it.

1 Peter 1:18–19
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

The life’s blood of the Son of God was the only payment accepted in order to purchase our redemption. The day that he died for us, he said, “it is finished” telling us our bill was paid.

So, if money means so little why do I get so captivated with it?

If money can’t buy me love, if money can’t buy me time, if money can’t buy my redemption then why do I care for it so much?

If Jesus’ sacrifice is the only thing that saves a soul then why do I think of it so little?

Father, help me truly remember and say, “I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me anything eternal.”
